When the Sea Turns Turquoise

Along the coast of northern Sardinia, the colour of the sea is never completely the same.

In the early morning, the water often appears muted and almost transparent beneath the soft Mediterranean light. Gentle movement across the surface reflects pale tones of silver and blue, while the coastline remains quiet and still.

As the day progresses, the colours begin to change.

Sunlight moves higher across the open sea, revealing clearer tones beneath the surface. Shallow water near the shore gradually turns turquoise, shaped by white sand, smooth granite formations and the clarity of the Mediterranean itself.

The transformation feels subtle at first.

Then suddenly, the coastline appears entirely different.

Bright reflections move across the water. The contrast between stone, sea and sky becomes sharper. Granite formations take on warmer tones beneath the sun, while the water shifts between transparent blue and vivid turquoise depending on depth and light.

This changing colour defines much of the atmosphere along the Costa Smeralda.

The landscape feels open and luminous, yet calm at the same time. Long afternoons unfold slowly beside the water, where shade becomes essential beneath the brightness of the Mediterranean sun.

Even as the coastline becomes more vivid during the day, there remains a sense of quietness within the landscape.

Nothing feels artificial.

The colours exist naturally — shaped by sunlight, weather, depth and movement rather than intensity or contrast alone.

It was this balance that became an important reference for Maliti.

Many of the tones within the first collection were inspired by these coastal transitions. Soft neutrals, faded blue, warm stone and natural linen reflect the understated palette found along the shores of Sardinia.

The Mediterranean rarely reveals its strongest colours all at once.

They appear gradually throughout the day — changing with the movement of light, wind and water.

And often, it is in these quiet moments that the sea turns its clearest shade of turquoise.
